If CAD files do not exist or cannot be obtained, models can easily be generated from scans. There are two main scanning techniques available; LIDAR and photogrammetry. LIDAR uses lasers to scan and generates a ‘point cloud’, including color information. This can easily be imported into our system. Photogrammetry is the technique of taking multiple photographs and stitching them together into a 360 degree view. It is often combined with a range finding technique such as RADAR to get accurate measurements of the scene.
There are many companies that scan buildings and equipment and we are partnered with several.

Finally it is possible to generate the models ‘by hand’ using photographs and some indication of scale. For this we use an art studio who’s work we find to be of very high quality.
Once the models are created we work with our customers to combine them with the data that is to be accessed through the model. This is typically real time sensor data, maintenance records, datasheets and many other data sources.
Cost
Generating models is surprisingly quick and easy. Obviously it varies depending on the size and complexity, but it is usual to get going for a few thousand dollars.

Platforms
As we use gaming technology to render the 3D models, our twins are available on just about any computing platform. There is a Web GL version that can be accessed through a browser, a native iOS application for iPad and support for common VR headsets.
